Top Flite are known for not messing around when it comes to developing quality sets for beginner women. Innovative design and use of technology results in sets that cover players of all abilities – but again, most complete sets are purchased by newbies. Easy to purchase. Everything you need (and nothing that you don’t) in one set.
With so many options out there, though, we need to focus on one set at a time while reviewing, and this article is all about the Top Flite Women’s 2020 XL 12-Piece set.
Appearance
First, this set is available in both standard and petite sizes, and what you have here is a complete set that is primed and ready for the course. With this set, you receive:
- A driver
- 3-wood
- 5 Hybrid
- 6-9 Irons
- Putter
- 2 Head Covers
- Lightweight Stand Bag
Each club, aside from the putter, are made from graphite shafts. This allows for greater speed through the swing leading to more power and increased yardage. However, thanks to the weight distribution, mixed in with that impressive sweet spot, it does mean you have nothing to fear through striking the ball at a faster pace.
For the irons, then the head is made from stainless steel and provides a wider head than normal. This allows for a more even distribution of weight while the wider face reduces the chances of pulling your shot as the margin for error isn’t as low as it is with other brands.
It’s also worth mentioning the grip on the clubs as the grip is large enough for a variety of hand positions, and this is something that’s not always possible with women’s clubs. Also, the grip is capable of absorbing a lot of shock and energy, so your arms and shoulders won’t take a pounding.
From an appearance perspective, this set isn’t going to disappoint.
Performance
What is clear from the outset is that this the Top Flite XL 2020 complete set is designed for players of all abilities even though the design does lend itself more towards those still trying to master the game.
If we look at the driver as an example. The driver in this set is a 460cc composite driver with a low center of gravity that’s also more toward the back of the club head. It also has a 12 degree loft, and all of this together means it has a larger sweet spot than others making this driver far more forgiving. With the weight to the rear, it does also offer more control through the entire swing and reduces twisting of the club in the hands.
In other words, it’s going to reduce the chances of you missing the fairway. Hitting more fairways = having more fun. Trust me.
But that’s not all as the rest of the set follows along similar lines. We mentioned the wider face earlier, but we feel that this is so important that it’s worth bringing it up once again. Thanks to this design, the novice golfer has less to stress about when it comes to a clean strike of the ball. The spacing, and length, of groves on the face extend over a larger area than normal helping to bring that ball back on the correct line from your stance and swing rather than the slight differences in angles on the club head when striking.
We should also mention club head weight as each iron is around 270g to 290g which is perfectly acceptable. It does mean that they are heavy enough to offer real control without being too bottom heavy that would then obstruct the upper part of your swing. Also, the weight distribution prevents that twisting that leads to slicing or pulling your shot.
Overall, the performance of this set is what you would kind of expect from Top Flite. They don’t seek to complicate matters for no reason and focus on making it easier for an individual to use the clubs, keep control of them, and deliver the kind of shot they are looking for.
Who is it Best For?
This set is designed for those that need that extra bit of help with clubs that are more forgiving thanks to still working on their swing (with a PGA pro, I’d hope). Also, the design of these clubs has the intention of generating as much speed as possible.
What this means is that the Top Flite 2020 XL Complete Set allows for individuals with slightly less physical power and ability to still generate an impressive yardage. Throw in some increased control thanks to the center of gravity and weight balance, and what you have is a set that will lower your score thanks purely to focus on forgiveness.
Another Alternative
Now, this set is already aimed at the lower end of the price market, but that doesn’t mean that there’s not a better alternative out there. New sets on the market = high prices. It’s as simple as that.
Some readers may be wary of investing in a brand new set until they have made improvements to their game and even start to see the difference technology can make to a round. That being said, there are some other alternatives out there that will offer pretty much the same thing as this set by Top Flite.
For us, we’d suggest looking at local marketplaces, like Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. You can oftentimes pick up slightly used sets of less than $100. If you are new to golf, the clubs won’t matter that much anyway.
If you want a better value alternatives, consider Callaway Strata complete sets. It’s slightly higher quality and only $20 more. They are the most proven, most popular beginner complete sets for female golfers. Strata sets are the best value sets on the market for beginner women golfers… no question about that. But like I said, these complete sets are all pretty much the same if you are new golfer. You won’t be able to tell the difference. You just want a high quality set that will last long enough for you to continue to grow as a golfer.
Final Thoughts
Our overall verdict is that this Top Flite Women’s XL 2020 set represents real value for your money while also providing you with technological advantages that will also improve your game. The clubs are very well-balanced but if you feel that this brand new set is pushing the bank balance a bit too much, then buying a Strata complete should deliver the same results at a fraction of the price.
