Alright, I’ll say it… If you are a high handicap golfer, the golf ball doesn’t matter that much. There. Read it again if you need to. Let it sink it. It really doesn’t matter that much.

You could be playing with the cheapest golf balls on the market or a brand new Titleist Pro V1x golf ball and still shoot probably the exact same score. The premium golf balls are only going to reward a better skilled golfer. If you can’t consistently hit greens, or hit chips and pitches cleanly, then a high end golf ball is a complete waste for you. There will be a lot of golf websites that will still recommend an expensive ball, just to get the extra commissions. I would never do that, because I honestly want to save you money when it comes to golf.

The point of it is to show that you shouldn’t be buying a premium golf ball, no matter what your buddy said. As a high handicapper, you might get a SMIDGE better results overall, but they will in no way be worth the extra money in any sort of way.

There is no use in buying a brand new golf ball for 2x to3x the price of the same golf ball that is a little used. You are going to lose the golf ball anyway. Or you are going to hit a tree and scuff the ball. Or maybe the cart path. You get the point. No use in buying a brand new golf ball when it will eventually be ruined/lost anyway.

But, those two things aside (don’t buy a premium ball, and don’t buy a brand new ball), I know there will still be high handicappers that want to buy a good brand new golf ball online. So, I’ll give you a rundown of the best golf balls that you can buy.

Alright, enough of an introduction. Let’s jump into the best golf balls that you can buy. For a high handicap golfer, you better not spend much than $20 a dozen on golf balls, and yes I am including shipping in that price!

Best Cheap Golf Ball for a High Handicapper: Wilson Staff FLI

If you are not brainwashed into thinking that a premium golf ball will lead to you shooting better scores, good for you! Like I said earlier, the golf ball really doesn’t matter… ESPECIALLY for golfers with high handicaps. With that being said, there are some cheap, decent quality golf balls on the market that will work just fine for your golf game.

The first one that comes to mind is Wilson Staff FLI (Freaking Long on Impact). If you can get over the gimmicky name, it’s actually a half way decent golf ball. I would say that it is the cheapest golf ball that I would recommend. When you look at golf balls priced under this one, you get into off brand, crappy balls. These types of balls will actually hinder your golf game, so stick with name brand balls.

Let’s get one thing straight. The Wilson Staff FLI balls are not the bee’s knees. The feel rock hard at impact, no matter what club you are using. However, they will fly pretty far. The will get the job done, that’s for sure.

Best Value Golf Ball for High Handicap Golfers: Srixon Soft Feel

If you are not familiar with Srixon as a golf brand, you better become familiar ASAP. They offer a good number of high quality golf balls on a budget. I would say that this particular ball, the Srixon Soft Feel, is the best golf ball for the money at the time of this writing. If you are reading this article many years after 2018, I would just look for an entry level Srixon golf ball on the market. They don’t produce any crap quality golf balls.

I used to play this ball for many seasons. I could always get it for under $20, and they produced great feeling golf shots. Everything hit correctly felt great at impact, and the distance was fantastic as well.

All things considered, you can’t do much better than this for under $20. As a high handicapper, you shouldn’t spend a dollar over $20 in my opinion, unless you are just set on trying a particular ball. Srixon has offered company wide discounts many times in the past few years. You might want to consider waiting and stocking up when they put the balls on sale.

Best Overall Golf Ball for High Handicappers: Callaway SuperSoft

The Callaway Super Soft golf ball is in incredible deal. It performs very similarly to the more expensive Chrome Hex golf balls, but at a much lower cost perfect for those with high handicaps.

This ball will fly far and feel pretty decent at impact. It will feel a little “harder” at impact compared to a more expensive ball, but the results will be nearly the same. The ball won’t spin a whole lot a round the greens, but that shouldn’t be a problem for new-ish golfers.

I’d say what interests high handicappers the most is getting a ball that is super long, as well as a ball that isn’t as hard as a rock. For example, the ball that I list below (TaylorMade Burner) is a ball that flies super far, but feels terrible with nearly every shot. It won’t feel “like butter” in any sense of the phrase. However, the Callaway SuperSoft is a ball that is a mix between long and pretty decent feel with all shots. For that reason, it’s the best overall golf ball for you.

Longest Golf Ball for High Handicap Golfers: TaylorMade Burner

If you don’t care about a single thing except distance when you are picking a golf ball, this is the one for you. The TaylorMade Burner model clubs and balls are meant solely for beginners that want the most distance possible. The ball won’t feel good at impact, and the ball won’t spin on the greens at all. You might find that your golf ball will keep rolling off the greens unless you can hit them high and land them softly.

For high handicappers, though, this isn’t typically a problem, as you most likely aren’t hitting many greens to begin with. Plus, the extra feel and spin around the greens isn’t something that you are looking for in a ball, so you won’t miss these qualities at all.

The TaylorMade Burner golf ball is rock hard. It feels and acts very similar to just a range ball. It is very durable and can last you many rounds (if you avoid losing them!).

Best Used Golf Ball Lot for High Handicappers: Callaway 50 Ball Lot 

As I mentioned in the introduction of this article, high handicap golfers should not be buying new golf balls. It is am absolute waste of money, as used balls perform just as well.

Callaway has produced a lot of high quality golf balls throughout the past 5-10 years, and this lot will include a lot of them. When it comes down to how much money you spend per golf ball, this is a great deal, even considering that the balls are used.

When you buy this Callaway lot of golf balls, you’ll get to experiment with multiple different models. Eventually, you might find one that you really like. Then, the next time you buy golf balls, you can buy just that ball instead.

For all of the 50 or 100 golf ball lots, I’d say this one is hard to beat when it comes to value. It won’t be a big deal if you lose a ball or two, but you’ll still be getting to play with high quality golf balls. Very hard to beat in my opinion.
