One of the two new releases this year for Cobra is the F Max Airspeed Driver. Cobra came out with two drivers most recently, the F Max and a Speedzone. The F Max is geared towards the slower swinging, higher handicap player. There are some great benefits to this driver, and depending on what you are looking for, F Max Airspeed could be an excellent fit for your game. Here is our take on the F Max Airspeed and stay tuned for an alternative option that could save you a bit of money.
Club Head Weight
The F Max Airspeed Driver weighs about 285grams. This is almost fifty grams less than a traditional driver. If you struggle to get swing speed, this club will be much easier for you to hit it longer. The titanium on the previous model was replaced with a carbon fiber crown. The carbon fiber crown freed up ten grams of weight that was repositioned low and in the back. All of this means that this driver will launch high and give you plenty of distance.
Offset = Draw Bias
The offset design is in place to help players who struggle with a slice. In addition to this offset design, the F Max Airspeed is excellent for alignment. On the top of the club, two lines look like ridges. Cobra calls these PWR Ridges, and they are better than just a dot on the top of the clubhead.
Available Options
The Airspeed driver comes in an 11.5 and a 15-degree loft. These drivers are not adjustable in any way. Cobra made this driver with no adjustable hosel and no discretionary weights. In doing so, it saved them added weight and allowed them to make this the lightest driver on the market. We love adjustable drivers, but the one good thing about this driver not being adjustable is that it is much less expensive.
Stock Shaft
The Airspeed F Max comes standard with a Cobra airspeed 40 graphite shaft. This is a low spinning, high launching with a low kick point. All of this will benefit the high handicap player the most.
Who Is This For?
The F Max Airspeed Driver is not going to be a good fit for every female golfer. Cobra built this to be very forgiving and high launching. If you have a decent amount of clubhead speed, you will likely hit this driver a bit too high and not enjoy the results you get. You always want to make sure you are using a club that takes advantage fo your clubhead speed and doesn’t hold you back.
If you are graduating from a beginner’s complete set and looking to build your first high end set of ladies golf clubs, this would be a perfect driver solution.
The Negatives
Like any new release to the market, the F Max Airspeed driver is not cheap. Since this is not an adjustable driver, the price is lowered slightly, but it is still quite a bit of money to spend on one club. As we always do, we found an alternative for you that will help you save quite a bit of money.
Better Value Alternative: Cobra F Max Driver
This model is a few years older than the Airspeed, and it is not as light, but it is still a very high performing Driver. The F Max original driver is going to save you several hundred dollars, but it will again feature the offset design to help the golfer who loses the ball to the right.
Even though the weighting is not as light as the Airspeed, this F Max was still built for the higher handicap player that lacks clubhead speed. It is by no means a heavy driver.
The crown of the club is not carbon fiber, which is one of the reasons the club is heavier than the Airspeed, but it is effortless to align this clubhead. The F Max comes with a midsize grip to help increase consistency as well.
Overall Verdict
This Airspeed Offset Ladies Driver by Cobra is an excellent advancement in golf club technology. Some players cannot learn to swing a club faster, and others have physical limitations that keep them from swinging fast. Technology can now make up those differences. If this describes you, it is worth it to give the Airspeed a try. It is a better fit for you than the new Cobra Speedback, and it could be the change you need in your game to see those drives finally go the lengths you need them to.
If the Airspeed is too expensive for you, the next best option for the forgiving and lightweight options would be the original F Max Driver by Cobra. Either of these will be a good choice if you are upgrading from something within the last few years.
