The Big Bertha name has been around for many years. If someone says they are playing a Big Bertha, it certainly does not mean that it is as nice and shiny looking as these 2019 Callaway Big Bertha Ladies Irons. The Big Bertha name has always been a sign of a mid handicap level golf club, designed for both forgiveness and distance. The 2019 Callaway Big Bertha women’s irons are no exception. This is one of the better-looking iron sets that Callaway has released for women in quite some time. We will give you our honest opinion about these clubs, and as always an alternative should you not love the price tag on these.
The Look
We fully understand that looks aren’t everything, but when it comes to these Big Bertha ladies irons, they just look better than almost any other ladies iron on the market. This club features a black PVD finish that will help keep the glare down and have your golf bag looking amazing. Although these irons are a bit thick, the black color makes them look thinner than some other similar irons. Everything looks thinner in black, right?
The Technology
The Big Bertha irons are considered super game improvement clubs. These are the easiest Callaway irons to hit for 2019. The center of gravity is low, and in the center, so you will have no problem launching this iron into the air.
The Suspended Energy Core is a tungsten weight surrounded by the urethane microspheres. We know this may sound confusing. What you need to know is that the center of this iron head has small bead-like pieces that will absorb any vibration at impact and leave you with some incredible feel.
This irons, just like the Rogue Irons released in 2019, has the 360 Face cup technology. Think of it like a spring on the clubface that sends the ball launching as soon as you make contact. That, combined with the high performing core, makes these irons very long in addition to their forgiveness.
Although this set is not a progressive design as you move closer to the long irons, you will see the lie angle change just a bit. The lie angle change will help make the long irons a bit more forgiving when you need it. We love that this set is a super game improvement option, but because the feel is so good, it will work for you as your handicap lowers as well.
Shaft
The shaft for these Big Bertha Callaway Ladies irons is the Recoil ESX 460. This is a very lightweight and high launching shaft. For the slower swinging lady golfers, you will not have trouble getting the ball speeds you want with this golf club.
Set Composition
The ladies Big Bertha iron set is available in the 4-PW, AW & SW. We really do not recommend buying a four iron in this situation. Although these clubs are easy to hit, a hybrid is a much better choice for the four. When it comes to the wedges, we suggest going with a different sand wedge as well. The Callaway one has an excellent feel, but it is only 54 degrees of loft. That is a bit low if you are trying to get out of a bunker with a high lip. Choose a sand wedge with some more bounce and a thinner and cleaner leading edge.
The Better Value Alternative
There is no question that the Big Bertha irons are a premium set. The thing to keep in mind when looking for an alternative is to focus on the positive features that the Big Bertha has to offer. With this set, it is high launching, reliable distance, and lots of forgiveness. The same year these were put out, Callaway also released the Rogue irons. The Rogue are not as expensive and have dropped in price considerably since their release.
The Callaway Ladies Rogue Irons (the better value alternative) have the same 360 Face Cup technology that the Big Bertha irons have, and some say they are a little longer than the Big Bertha. One thing that we will say about the Big Bertha is that their feel is a bit better. The Rogue uses the urethane microspheres as well, but the overall impact just does not feel as good. Just like the Big Bertha irons, the Rogue is also available in the 4-SW.
Are the Callaway Big Bertha 2019 Ladies Irons Worth It?
We have hit both the Rogue and the Big Bertha, and in all honesty, the Big Bertha is really worth the money. If you don’t want to buy them now, maybe wait a year or two and get them used, but this is a set of irons that you will have in your bag for a very long time. If you have been a loyal Big Bertha fan through the years, this set is an obvious and smart upgrade from previous models.
