If you are looking for the lightest women’s iron set on the market, then you are reading the correct review.
The XXIO Prime 11 Royal Edition ladies iron set is literally the lightest women’s iron set of all time, excluding cheap off-brand clubs. So I guess you could say it’s the lightest high-quality set of irons for women.
Here’s our honest review!
Appearance
When it comes to appearance, these are pretty hit or miss. You may love the rose gold color scheme, or you may hate it. There’s hardly an in between.
At address, the XXIO Prime 11 Royal Edition iron club heads are pretty compact for a ladies set of irons. After all, it’s pretty hard to make a lightweight iron with a chunky, oversized club head. For most, this will be the most compact iron set that you’ve ever played. While it may take some getting used to, it’s hard to doubt just how appealing a compact set is while standing over the ball.
If you take a look at the club head, you’ll see that the weight is focused very low. This results in a very high launch, forgiving design. That’s the perfect combination for most senior women golfers that struggle with getting enough height on their shots to start with.
Performance
Full disclosure here: I am not a senior women. In fact, I am quite the opposite – a young man. So I can’t give you specific anecdotal proof that these clubs perform as well as XXIO says they do. However, I know XXIO and I know why clubs perform the way that they do, so I can still give you general expectations.
Because these are the lightest clubs on the market, they will allow you to create the most club head speed compared to any other club. That, paired with the fact that the lofts are relatively “strong”, results in the longest iron set for female seniors with slower swings.
However, that extra speed may come with a small decrease in consistency. Heavier clubs are generally better for consistency, while lighter clubs are better for speed. These are far lighter than the average women’s iron set, so the lighter weight will definitely take some getting used to.
If you are like me, you don’t hit the center of the face every time. You’ll be happy to know that these are extremely forgiving on off-center hits. Even if you miss the club face by half an inch, the ball will still fly pretty high and straight. That’s due to the weight being focused low & the club face being slightly wider than most.
Unfortunately, these clubs are cast (not forged). As a result these clubs don’t excel in feel and sound at impact, but hardly anyone will notice. If you are a high to mid handicap senior golfer, then sound & feel are not that important anyway.
Pros & Cons
Pros:
- The lightest clubs on the market for senior women (light club head, shaft, AND even grip) to allow you to swing faster
- Very high-launch club heads due to the low center of gravity design. If you struggle with getting enough height on your shots, this is a great option.
- Great for seniors that think their current clubs are too heavy for them
- Definitely a status symbol and a great talking piece (most golfers are not familiar with the brand).
- The brand is literally KNOWN for making the best performing iron sets for seniors
Cons:
- Crazy expensive, especially for a set of irons that isn’t even forged
- Hard to find a place to try them out if you wanted to
- Not incredible feel and sound at impact
Who the XXIO Prime 11 Royal Edition Irons Are Best For
I’m going to give it to you straight here. After all, this is an honest review.
The XXIO Prime 11 Royal Edition irons are best for wealthy, slow-swinging, low-hitting senior women. If you need to hit the ball longer and higher, this is the set for you.
Also, if you get tired towards the end of the round, it might be because your current clubs are too heavy. So if you think that may be the case, then consider trying out this light weight option.
The slower your swing and the lower your ball flights, the better fit these will be for you. However, these aren’t for everyone. These will be priced so high that the majority of readers wouldn’t dare buy them. And I don’t blame you at all. If you are going for “value” instead of “cream of the crop”, then head to the very bottom section of this review.
Better Value Lightweight Iron Set
If the price tag is going to give you nightmares, then you may want to consider a better value alternative. Truthfully, if I were in your shoes, I would get the Cobra F-Max Airspeed women’s irons set. Cobra has made high quality senior iron sets for many years, and this is their lightest one yet. Just like the XXIO Prime 11 Royal Edition women’s irons, the Cobra irons have lightweight 1) heads, 2) graphite shafts, and 3) grips. Anywhere they could save weight, they did!
While the Cobra irons are a tad bit heavier than the XXIO irons, the weight difference is minimal, but the price difference is SIGNIFICANT. You can buy a set of Cobra F-Max Airspeed irons brand new for like $500. On the other hand, the XXIO Prime 11 Royal Edition women’s irons will set you back thousands.
