Technology
If you are looking to get confused by a bunch of technical jargon, Callaway can help with that. We don’t like using big words here. We’ll keep it simple: the Epic Flash Sub Zero is a driver created using Artificial Intelligence to make it one of the longest and highest performing drivers ever assembled.
Now, this driver is not for everybody. If you noticed, this is the Sub Zero model that we are talking about. “Sub Zero” is the terminology that Callaway uses when they are referring to their better player’s line of clubs. You will need a faster swing speed and a low handicap to see all the benefits that the Epic Flash Sub Zero driver has to offer.
The Flash Face technology featured on this golf club helps to give much more ball speed. The ball speed measured coming off the clubface of the Epic Flash Sub Zero are faster than what we have ever seen before. Is the Callaway Epic Flash Sub Zero driver worth $350? In our opinion, heck no. There are simply too many drivers out there that will perform nearly the same, but at a FAR lower price. Below are some better value alternatives that you should consider. And, as always, consider buying a slightly used driver if value is what you are searching for.
Alternative #1 to Save $50: Callaway Rogue Sub Zero Driver
If you want to stay with the Callaway brand, but you want to spend a bit less money, you may have luck looking for the Callaway Rogue Sub Zero Driver. The difference (if any) is marginal. The Rogue Sub Zero model is still extremely long and forgiving, and at a fraction of the price of the Epic Flash Sub Zero model.
You can save about $50 by going with the older Rogue model. The main difference is the fact that the Epic Flash has a movable weight on the back of the sole of the club head. The Rogue rear weight is not movable, but that’s not a huge concern for most golfers.
The Rogue is adjustable with two interchangeable (not movable) weights. It also has a very lightweight carbon crown that allows you to get some very high ball speeds with this driver. Remember that Callaway worked with Boeing when creating this line of clubs. When it comes to speed, there is no question that Boeing knows what they are doing.
Alternative #2 to Save $100: Cobra F9 Speedback Driver
The Cobra F9 Speedback driver is not the latest release from Cobra, so you can often find it for an excellent price. The Speedback is an easy to hit driver with fantastic feel and speed, just like the Callaway Epic Flash Sub Zero. The Speedback is also highly adjustable, making it a great club choice for a wide range of players.
The F9 is the longest driver that Cobra had released at the time. It took the forgiveness and consistency of the prior F8 release and added speed. The F9 comes in a few shafts, but the Aldila options always pair well with the Cobra clubs.
Potentially one of the best things about the F9 is the Cobra Connect technology that allows you to log in to your phone and see how far you are hitting your driver. If you are wondering if you hit it further when it is set to 9.5 or 10.5, the Cobra Connect technology will allow you to figure that out.
Compared to the Callaway Epic Flash Sub Zero driver, the F9 will perform practically the same. Cobra is highly underrated when it comes to their drivers.
